The federal government on Jan 5 opposed a Michigan lawsuit that asks the U.S. Supreme Court to close parts of a key Midwest waterway system in order to prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes and threatening the region's $7 billion fishing and tourism industries. U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan said that while the government was greatly concerned about the Asian carp threat, Michigan's lawsuit was premature and could produce harms of its own. The State of Illinois also filed papers Tuesday objecting to the lawsuit. Michigan filed suit in the high court last month against Illinois, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. It said an Asian carp invasion of the Great Lakes would cause "virtually certain" economic and environmental disaster.
